This book gets my big thumbs up as being an insightful morality tale for all. It was as if all the stories of the Bible were complied into one whopper of a meaningful tale. The book shows horrible consequences for actions that are not well considered. This creates two plots that eventually mesh into high stakes race for souls. This book kept me turning pages well past my bedtime. Angels and demons converse concurrently with the townspeople of Ashton. A reporter and a pastor compare notes and discover a plan to control the townspeople and even all humanity. What is unseen is the holy and demonic battle for all of earths souls. The town is slowly leaving its typical activities for more nefarious shadow type dealings. There are also themes of light versus dark, the big corporation versus small town business, and racketeering/intrigue versus the psychological and spirtual well being of community at large. On the surface, this is about the small town of Ashton in which things are taking a downhill turn for the worse.

It is a book that has proven itself shelf and read worthy by virtue of its universal theme of good versus evil. The edition I read was in its seventeenth printing. This Present Darkness was first published in 1986. It has since sold over 2 million copies worldwide, sparking a renewed interest in the concept of spiritual warfare. This fast-paced thriller birthed an entirely new genre, setting the standard for spiritual suspense. Up against supernatural forces, the future of the town seems bleak – but the power of prayer might be able to influence the outcome of the fight.

Unseen by the human protagonists, armies of angels and demons wage war against one another in the spiritual realm for the souls of the people of Ashton. The tiny college town of Ashton becomes the unlikely battleground in a cosmic clash between good and evil. Along with the local pastor of a struggling church, Hank Busch, they find something much bigger than they expected-a demonic plot to enslave their town and, eventually, the world. She brings the investigation to her boss, Marshall Hogan. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12Īfter the film in her camera is mysteriously destroyed at a small-town festival, reporter Bernice Kreuger knows she’s found something worth covering up.
