This slogan, inspired by bell hooks’ book of the same name, is widely used to envision a feminist movement that is open to all people and that, in theory, recognizes the real diversity among feminists and among women more generally.īut the closer one looks at how this idea is actually being used, the more one starts to wonder: is feminism being stripped of its challenging and confrontational aspects in favour of a new, de-politicized feminist identity that is incapable of addressing ongoing inequalities?Īt the University of Western Ontario, for instance, a recent essay in The F Word, a zine put out by the Women’s Issues Network (WIN) collective, celebrated feminism as being “for everybody,” including the author, a member of Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party. Thompson-King and her collaborator, visual artist Ann Kraus, will present a portion of their multimedia performance piece, Deerheads, a dialogue of video art and vocal composition.Feminism is for everybody, the mantra goes.

In honor of the life and work of bell hooks, we begin Women’s History Month with a concert of original musical and multimedia works inspired by the struggle against sexist oppression. Recognizing the historic racism and classism in the white feminist movement, hooks wrote of an inclusive movement to end sexist oppression and asserted that race cannot be separated from gender, history, and class when considering a person’s freedom. Author of over 40 books on feminism, race, and class, including Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women in Feminism Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center All About Love and Feminism Is for Everybody, hooks’ work encouraged accessibility to feminist theory beyond academic circles-through art, music, and popular culture.
